Addressing DaVinci Resolve’s color shift

Quick update: This video of Creative Video Tips address this issue in newer macOS and Resolve versions:

I should add to the title “Using a Macintosh”, because that’s where the problem is; see, Apple is well known for doing things their way, in many ways it is better, like the DPI scaling using multiple displays, Windows sucks at that, but the way it handles color, well, is quite entangled.

Dan Swierenga wrote a good article that goes deep into this issue and offers some workarounds, a recommended read, but considering that most enthusiast that produce for YouTube use Rec.709/sRGB, I’ll keep this article short, here is how to prevent the color shift:

  1. Go into Resolve General Preferences and check the “Use Mac display color profiles for viewers”.
  2. Choose “sRGB” for your project output color space.
  3. Let resolve tag your output file.

In other words, you are just disabling color management for your delivery, cheers!

Grading The Batman (2022)

Since I saw The Batman (2022) in theaters, I thought the image was far too dark, I could barely see the characters’ faces at all. At first, I assumed it was a problem with the theater’s projection. Then I bought the Blu-ray and watched it on an HDR TV, and it was still way too […]

iPhone HDR video in Resolve the right way!

There are tons of videos explaining how to grade iPhone HDR footage to SDR/Rec.709, and they’re all 100% wrong – because none of them address the real problem: IT’S HDR! The TL;DR is this: iPhone HDR video is recorded in full-range (0-255), but DaVinci Resolve assumes it’s in video/legal range (16-235) by default. Recently I […]
